Case Study:
Casa de Sueños

To achieve this look and level of detail, custom decorative tiles were created for almost every room in this Mediterranean-inspired home.

Project Description

Decorative ceramic tile helped transform this newly constructed beach residence in La Jolla, California to reflect the designer and homeowners’ unique vision —a beautiful combination of historic inspiration and California Mediterranean style.

Native Tile was employed to develop specialty decorative tile and moldings in a custom color palette to compliment the natural stone that was selected for this new home. The colors and design of the tiles were chosen to compliment the particular style in each room.

Eighteen months and thousands of handmade tiles later, the completed designs begin with the entry steps that lead you through the tiled arch at the front door. Inside the home, tile baseboards flow from room to room. The home features a focal stone fireplace in the bar-area, decorative staircase risers leading to the second floor, and a tiled shower archway in the guest bathroom. The kitchen displays a number of tile features: the countertop and matching backsplash plus a detailed tile rug that highlights the kitchen island. Sitting on the backyard patio, the homeowners can enjoy a view of the ocean while relaxing beside their unique tiled firepit.

Why Tile®?

Ceramic tile’s versatility allowed for the creation of custom designs to be used throughout the inside and outside of the home. Although each room is different, the custom tiles designed for Casa de Sueños come together to create a cohesive example of the California Mediterranean style.

A glaze palette for the tile was specifically selected and produced for this project—the colorful, yet earthy tones of the ceramic tiles coordinate well with the stone also used in the home.

The final outcome of this unique project successfully combines the beauty of natural stone with custom and traditional ceramic tile patterns and colors that together pays respect to the California Mediterranean architectural tradition.
