Delbrook Recreation Centre
North Vancouver’s William Griffin Community Centre and Delbrook Community Centre needed a fresh and modern update to accommodate the growing population.
This thriving community in British Columbia was faced with a dilemma –their two aging recreation centers, the William Griffin Community Centre and the Delbrook Community Centre, were undersized, underutilized, and simply not meeting the needs of the community.
North Vancouver made the decision to merge existing but outdated facilities with a redesign to create one new multi-purpose community center. The redesign incorporated three levels of recreation, cultural, and community spaces— a six-lane lap pool, fully-accessible leisure pool and a hot tub, sauna and steam room, all-gender changing rooms, a large gymnasium, weight room, fitness studio, two convertible squash/racquetball courts, multi-use rooms for community programs and rental spaces, plus pottery and arts and crafts studios (complete with kilns).
Five years of redesign and construction incorporated new tile installation and waterproofing in the lap pool, leisure pool, sauna, steam room, and changing rooms. Tile was also used in the elevators, restrooms, and staff lunchroom areas.
The bulk of the tile installation was done for the leisure pool and the lap pool. A striking array of mosaic tile was used for the walls of the leisure pool and white tile with a blue accent pattern was used in the lap pool to correspond with the lane markings.
The Delbrook Community Recreation Centre is now a prime hub for health and recreation for the North Vancouver community.
