The Tile Council of North America (TCNA) is proud to announce the revised ANSI A137.3 American National Standard Specifications for Gauged Porcelain Tiles and Gauged Porcelain Tile Panels/Slabs – 2022 publication. This standard is available now from TCNA and includes new specifications for 2 cm gauged porcelain tile pavers.
The Importance of the Standard
2 cm gauged porcelain tile pavers have been growing rapidly in popularity over recent years. While they can be used in a variety of applications, their strength and durability make them particularly suited for outdoor installations.
Rising consumer demand for outdoor living spaces — pool surrounds, patios, walkways, and outdoor kitchens — and the widespread use of 2 cm gauged porcelain tile pavers made the need for new specifications all the more pressing. Now, specifiers, installers, building owners, and consumers can rely on standardized product performance criteria to ensure the success of paver installations.
Hundreds of hours of research, carried out over three years by the International Product Assurance Laboratories (formerly TCNA Product Performance Testing Laboratory), went into the development of the 2 cm specifications by the ANSI ASC A108 Committee. As 2 cm porcelain tile pavers are often used in unbonded or raised flooring applications, particular attention was given to strength and impact criteria when developing the new specifications found in the revised A137.3-2022 standard.
Interest in outdoor living has been growing exponentially the last few years. As market trends and tile usage continue to evolve, so too must the specifications that define them. Without standards, tile consumers would have no way to know what to expect in terms of performance, and problems resulting from an undefined range of products could hinder the growth of this exciting market segment.
